Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump are making their final pitches to voters on Monday, the last full day of campaigning before Election Day.

The vice president was joined by celebrities Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Ricky Martin, and The Roots in Philadelphia this evening as Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera support her in Pittsburgh and Las Vegas.

Trump also concentrated on the Keystone State, delivering his “closing message” at a rally in Pittsburgh before one final rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan — where he closed out both his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.

Speaking in Pittsburgh, the former president brought his family on stage; repeated his idea for a wrestling league for migrants; and called Rep Adam Schiff “scum”.

Trump also announced he had been endorsed by podcaster Joe Rogan and was joined on stage by Megyn Kelly. He spoke for approximately two hours meaning his supporters in Michigan waited past midnight for his arrival there.

Also at midnight, the first in-person votes were cast in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire — a tradition going back almost 65 years. There are just six registered voters in the town who split evenly between the two candidates.

RESULT: Dixville Notch split evenly between Trump and Harris

The first votes of the 2024 election have been counted in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, the tiny town where all six registered voters go to the ballot box just after midnight on Election Day.

Counted moments later the village is evenly split: three votes for Kamala Harris and three votes for Donald Trump. Four of the voters are registered Republicans and two are undeclared.

In 2020 all five voters went for Joe Biden.

In 2016, there were two votes for Trump, four for Hillary Clinton and one for Gary Johnson.

Megyn Kelly helps Trump deliver closing message — nine years after he called her ‘nasty'

Conservative podcaster Megyn Kelly delivered a fiery speech supporting Donald Trump during an event billed as his “closing message” on Monday night, a full-circle moment after the former president and the onetime Fox News star feuded bitterly during Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Invited to the stage in Pittsburgh, Kelly defended Trump against recent controversies, including his repeated pledge to be the “protector” of women, and pressed his case on border security and his opposition to transgender athletes participating in sports.

Kamala Harris tells the crowd gathered to hear her speak on the steps made famous by the movie Rocky in Philadelphia: “It’s good to be back in the city of brotherly love where the foundation of our democracy was forged. And here at these famous steps, a tribute to those who start as the underdog and climb to victory.”

“This could be one of the closest races in history,” she warns her supporters.

“We will win,” Harris says. "And we will win because when you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for. And we have an opportunity in this election to finally turn the page on a decade of politics that has been driven by fear and division."
