Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Donald Trump doubled down on his outlandish claims against Haitian migrants in Ohio during a rambling, low-energy press conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

“Over the past three and a half years, Kamala has resettled half a million illegal migrants from Haiti into American communities,” Trump claimed on Friday afternoon. “They're doing it right now in Springfield, Ohio, 20,000 illegal Haitian migrants have descended upon a town of 58,000 people, destroying their way of life.”

Trump falsely claimed during the debate on Tuesday that Haitian migrants in Springfield (who are there legally at the town’s invitation) were stealing and eating domestic pets.

Meanwhile, questions have been raised about the proximity and access to Trump granted to far right-wing instigator Laura Loomer, which has unsettled a number of Trump allies given her history of racist and conspiratorial comments.

Trump stressed on Truth Social that she is not part of the campaign.

Kamala Harris has urged Trump to return to the debate stage despite his announcement on Thursday that he would not face her again. The former president continues to insist that he won their encounter earlier this week despite widespread opinion to the contrary.

Trump is only running to stay out of jail, says 9/11 responder and advocate

A September 11, 2001 responder and victims’ rights advocate said he believes Donald Trump is running for president “to stay out of jail” and doesn’t actually care about the American people after the former president invited far-right figure Laura Loomer to the 9/11 memorial.

John Feal, who was injured while working as a demolition supervisor at Ground Zero after 9/11, told CNN on Thursday that he thinks the former president only cares about himself and has surrounded himself with other “self-absorbed” people like Loomer.

“Donald Trump’s not running for president, he’s running to stay out of jail,” Feal said.“I don’t care what anybody says.”

A key difference between Democrats and Republicans was revealed during debate week

Eric Garcia writes:

In 2022, after Donald Trump dined with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and antisemitic rapper Kanye West, Senator Thom Tillis condemned the sitdown — but didn’t denounce the former president.

“First, I honestly didn’t know who he was,” the North Carolina Republican told The Independent at the time. “If the reports are true and the president didn’t know who he was, whoever allowed them in the room should have been fired.”

Tillis, who has always had a tenuous relationship with Trump, deployed the same strategy after far-right conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer appeared in the Republican nominee’s entourage this week.

Stranded astronauts to vote in 2024 election from space

Per NBC News:

The two American astronauts stranded on the International Space Station through February said Friday they plan to vote in the November election from space.

“I sent down my request for a ballot today,” one of the astronauts, Butch Wilmore, said on a call with reporters on Friday afternoon. “It’s a very important role that we play as citizen including those elections, and NASA makes it very easy for us to do that.”

The other, Sunita Williams, agreed with the sentiment.

“It’s a very important duty that we have as citizens and looking forward to being able to vote from space, which is pretty cool,” she said.

Kamala Harris’s summer job at McDonalds is the latest thing under Trump’s skin

While still facing the fallout from his controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery last week, Donald Trump has launched a new line of attack on his Democratic presidential rival Kamala Harris: baselessly claiming that she is lying about working at McDonald’s in the 1980s.

Harris has repeatedly mentioned her brief stint holding down a summer job at the fast food joint while at college since she ascended to the top of the Democratic party’s ticket.

And, for some reason, it appears to have gotten under Trump’s skin.

Over the weekend, the former president has repeatedly accused Harris – without any evidence – of lying about working at McDonald’s.

Tim Walz rally crowd trolls Trump with chants of ‘we don’t eat cats’

The crowd at Tim Walz’s rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Thursday trolled Donald Trump over his false claims that Haitian immigrants are eating pets, breaking out into chants of: “We don’t eat cats!”

The Democratic vice presidential nominee reflected on Tuesday’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Trump, teasing the former president with his now-classic buzzword for the Republican ticket: “weird.”

“He said a lot of weird stuff too, so I’m just going to say that,” the Minnesota governor told the crowd.

Harris’s betting odds surge past Trump in wake of debate

Kamala Harris is surging past Donald Trump in the betting odds following Tuesday’s debate debacle for the former president.

After having started this week behind Trump, Harris is now even with him or ahead, according to a number of U.K. and offshore betting markets, USA Today noted.

At the U.K. bookmaker Betfair Exchange, more than $1.1 million was wagered during Tuesday night’s showdown, with Harris taking the lead about halfway through the debate, which went on for over 90 minutes.
