Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Donald Trump gave a thumbs up and waved to well-wishers as he walked to Marine 1 to begin hospitalisation at Walter Reed Medical Centre on Friday afternoon following cold-like symptoms of a fever and cough.

A White House spokesperson said it was a precautionary measure, while Trump's doctor said the president was taking a mix of drugs, including Regeneron's polyclonal antibody cocktail as well as aspirin, zinc, vitamin D, famotidine and melatonin.

Trump's campaign staff cancelled all in-person events for the first family, with Mike Pence to step in. Joe Biden, meanwhile, flew to Michigan to continue his campaign after testing negative, saying he sends prayers for Trump's 'health and safety'.

Controversial coronavirus tsar accused of playing down pandemic says 'no reason to panic' over Trump diagnosis

Dr Scott Atlas, a late addition to the White House Task Force and apparently an unpopular one with messrs Fauci and Redfield, has been urging Fox viewers not to panic over the president’s health.

“It is no surprise that people get the infection, even with precautions,” Dr Atlas said. “I anticipate a complete and full and rapid recovery back to normal after his necessary confinement period. I anticipate he’ll be back on the road and in full swing.”

Graig Graziosi has the full story.

GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tests positive

One of this president’s most influential establishment cheerleaders - and Mitt Romney’s niece - has also been diagnosed with coronavirus.

McDaniel was apparently last in Trump’s company on Saturday, when he unveiled Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to succeed Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Supreme Court…

…but, according to White House spokesman Judd Deere, the conservative justice is safe and sound.

“Judge Barrett is tested daily for Covid-19 - she has tested negative. She is following CDC guidance and best practices, including social distancing, wearing face coverings, and frequently washes hands,” he says.

Here’s Alex Woodward with the latest.

Ivanka and Jared Kushner both test negative as Donald’s symptoms said to be ‘mild’

The president’s beloved daughter and her husband have both been given the all-clear, joining the likes of Pompeo, Pence and Mnuchin in breathing sighs of relief as a White House official tells the AP the president’s symptoms are so far only “mild”.

Ivanka has naturally joined the chorus of conservative well-wishing.

Here’s Andrew Naughtie with the latest.

Nancy Pelosi says Trump only has himself to blame for coronavirus diagnosis

Speaking to MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle just now, the House speaker said the president’s conduct has been "a brazen invitation for something like this to happen".

She also said her prayers for him have “intensified” and that she herself was tested this morning - and it came out negative.

Here’s John T Bennett with the latest.

Joe Biden wishes Trumps well

The Democratic nominee responds to today’s news with a gracious message, which, as we’ve seen, is a marked contrast to Trump’s own loutish reaction to Hillary Clinton getting sick in 2016.

This is also very gallant from the director-general of the World Health Organisation, a body Trump has attempted to smear and discredit, along with China, in his search for a scapegoat for the global pandemic.

How the internet reacted to Trump’s positive diagnosis

Twitter has of course been a festival of schadenfreude this morning, with more memes that you could count.

This is a personal favourite.

How the internet reacted to Trump testing positive for coronavirus

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have confirmed that they have both tested positive for Covid-19 and have been forced into self-isolation. Trump confirmed the news on Thursday night after he and his wife took tests, which followed his close aide and former communications director Hope Hicks starting to show symptoms of the virus.
