From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Donald Trump is suing CBS News for $10bn alleging that the 60 Minutes interview with his rival Kamala Harris was deceptively edited to unlawfully influence the 2024 presidential election.

Thursday’s long-shot claim, filed less than a week before Election Day, follows his obsessive attacks on CBS and threats to revoke its license.

With five days of campaigning to go in the 2024 race, Harris and Trump are making their final pitches to voters, spending Thursday at rallies across the crucial Sun Belt states of Arizona and Nevada.

The Democratic presidential nominee hit back at her Republican rival after he vowed to “protect” women “whether the women like it or not” at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Wednesday.

“Donald Trump thinks he should get to make decisions about what you do with your body. Whether you like it or not,” Harris posted on X.

In a bizarre stunt prior to that speech, Trump had posed in a garbage truck dressed as a sanitation worker in an attempt to troll Harris and Joe Biden after the latter allegedly called MAGA voters “garbage” in anger over comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s already-notorious Madison Square Garden joke about Puerto Rico.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of this year’s election campaign ads

Eric Garcia writes:

With less than a week to go, campaigns have inundated any state or district with a competitive election with television ads to make their closing argument. This can be especially aggravating, especially after a long day of work where the average voter might just want to watch some mindless reality television or some football.

But in truth, campaigns needs to run ads there to meet voters where they are. This might be why we are seeing more ostentatious ads this election cycle than ever before.

While in her speeches, Vice President Kamala Harris has focused on the danger of Donald Trump’s rhetoric — even going so far as to call him a “petty tyrant” — most of her ads have gone all-in on the economy.

In the latest CNN polls of several battleground states, Kamala Harris leads Donald Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin - but the two are tied in Pennsylvania.

The so-called blue wall states are Harris’s most viable, but not only, path to an Electoral College victory after Tuesday’s election.

Gustaf Kilander looks at the numbers.

Giuliani bumbles through hearing with sex assault accuser that ends with personal attacks

Rudy Giuliani’s sexual assault case hearing spiraled into chaos for two hours that ended with the former New York City mayor being muted by the judge.

The first oral arguments in the civil suit, brought by accuser Noelle Dunphy, unfolded on Wednesday after a series of delays in the case that was first filed in early 2023. Dunphy, who claims to be his former employee, is accusing Giuliani of wide-ranging misconduct, including sexual harassment, assault, battery and a hostile work environment. The hearing was streamed online and journalists were allowed to watch.

Trump vows to ‘protect’ women ‘whether the women like it or not’

Dressed in a bright orange safety vest to troll Democrats in the war of words over comments in which Puerto Rico was called a “floating island of garbage” at another MAGA rally, Donald Trump told a crowd in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Wednesday that he wants to protect the women of America – whether they like it or not.

He even admitted that his campaign had told him not to say that, saying that they called it inappropriate. Online, people called it “threatening.”

Trump calls Harris ‘low-IQ individual’ but claims he is ‘very nice’ to her

Donald Trump called Kamala Harris a “low-IQ individual” before claiming he is “very nice” to her. Speaking at his rally in Rocky Mount on Wednesday (30 October), the former US President referred to his rival as a “low-IQ individual”, before then saying he is “very nice” to the Deomcrats. Trump said: “I will bring back a thing called The American Dream, isn’t that nice? Because we haven’t had that in a long time. “Our country will be bigger, better, bolder, richer, safer, and stronger than ever before.” He continued: “Kamala Harris, a low-IQ individual, is running a campaign of hate, anger and retribution. See I’m very nice to them, they’re not very nice to me.”

Trump prolongs uproar over Puerto Rico slur with garbage truck stunt

Donald Trump got off his private plane in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Wednesday evening and, donning a bright orange safety vest, got into a garbage truck in an attempt to troll Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

With election day looming, both the Republican and Democratic candidates are hoping to leverage the racist comments made against Puerto Rico at Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden on Sunday when a comedian called the US territory “a floating island of garbage.”

The truck was emblazoned with the Trump campaign logo and with the former president leaning out of the window similarly to his McDonald’s photo-op, he asked the press: “How do you like my garbage truck?”

Trump ‘considering withholding funds’ from police who won’t carry out mass deportation plan

Donald Trump is considering withholding federal police grants to local agencies that refuse to carry out his mass deportation plan, a report claims.

The former president has said that, if elected, he will implement a drastic plan to remove migrants and immigrants who have come to the United States – especially via the U.S.–Mexico border.

In order to make the plan work, members of Trump’s team have floated the idea of holding funds hostage to motivate local police to participate, three people close to his campaign told NBC News.

Ariana Baio reports.
