Kamala Harris says American patriots did not struggle for us to ‘submit to the will of another petty tyrant’

Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

With less than a week to go in the US presidential election race, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making their final pitches to voters, with both appearing in battleground North Carolina on Wednesday.

The Democratic presidential nominee has been forced to respond to Joe Biden inadvertently whipping up a conservative media storm by seemingly calling Trump’s supporters “garbage” in response to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s already-notorious Madison Square Garden joke about Puerto Rico.

Harris told reporters on Wednesday that she “strongly” disagrees with any criticism of the public based on their voting intentions.

Elsewhere, at a rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Trump also addressed the president’s comments.

“Last night, Joe Biden finally said what he and Kamala really think of our supporters,” he said. “He called them garbage and they mean it... even though, without question, my supporters are far higher quality than Crooked Joe or Lyin’ Kamala.”

He added: “My response to Joe and Kamala is very simple: You can’t lead America if you don’t love Americans.”

On Tuesday, Harris delivered her “closing argument” in Washington DC, speaking on the very same spot from which Trump told his supporters to “fight like hell” on January 6, 2021.

George Clooney narrates ad for Harris - months after writing damning op-ed calling for Biden to quit race

George Clooney provided his voice to a new ad for Kamala Harris months after calling on President Joe Biden to exit the race.

The 30-second ad spot, paid for by evangelical progressive group Vote Common Good, begins with three men walking into a polling center as one says: “Come on boys. Let’s make America great again.”

Las Vegas Sun editorial says ‘Trump’s cognitive decline becoming a troubling concern'

The Las Vegas Sun has published a strongly worded editorial stating that while “Donald Trump’s racism, sexism, xenophobia and penchant for corruption have long made him unfit for any public office, let alone the presidency,” his cognitive decline has now also become a troubling concern.

Americans from both sides of the political spectrum should be alarmed by Trump’s words and behavior. The nation must confront the fact that beyond his hateful character, he is crippled cognitively and showing clear signs of mental illness.

.... A recent analysis by The New York Times noted that Trump’s rally speeches over the past eight years have become darker, longer, more profane and increasingly unfocused and unhinged — a troubling sign that he is no longer able to articulate ideas or reason in ways we expect of our leaders. This makes him prey to manipulations by his own staff or, worse, the control of foreign adversaries.

He shambles about aimlessly, slurs his words and sometimes speaks gibberish. Always an effortless liar, now that his speeches are nothing more than a series of lies tangled in a mass inside his head, it appears he no longer even knows he’s lying.

Former Trump staffer says garbage truck stunt ‘total fail'

Alyssa Farah Griffin says Trump’s garbage truck stunt is a “total fail”.

She posted on X: “Am I cracking up? Yes.”

“Is it an effective stunt? No. He’s assuming voters hear ‘garbage’ & think of Biden’s gaffe.. but Trump campaign’s Puerto Rico debacle is much deeper in the zeitgeist. A total fail.”

Trump is sitting in a garbage truck taking questions from the media

No, really, he is...

Here’s what we’ve learned from the former president’s bizarre impromptu press conference.

Elon Musk needs to be protected:

No one loves Puerto Rico more than him, he knows nothing about a comedian, and Puerto Ricans love him.

He really insists he doesn’t know who the comedian is.

Trump hopes to declare victory on election night.

Latest polling gives Harris narrow edge over Trump in Wisconsin and Michigan but tied in Pennsylvania

In the latest CNN polls of several battleground states, Kamala Harris leads Donald Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin - but the two are tied in Pennsylvania.

The so-called blue wall states are Harris’s most viable, but not only, path to an Electoral College victory after Tuesday’s election.

Gustaf Kilander has more:

Harris has edge over Trump in Wisconsin and Michigan – but tied in Pennsylvania

Trump won all three in 2016, but President Joe Biden managed to win them all back four years later
