Former chief of staff sues California pol after injuring back during coerced sex: lawsuit

A California lawmaker who abruptly crossed the aisle last month and switched her party allegiance from Democrat to Republican is accused of treating her top aide like a sex slave, at one point demanding oral sex from the married 57-year-old, who claims he herniated three discs in his back while carrying out the assignment.

“I want you to kiss it and prove your loyalty,” State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil, 50, told former Chief of Staff Chad Condit during a work trip, according to a civil suit filed in Sacramento County Superior Court.

The two were driving to Inyo County when they pulled over so Condit, who unsuccessfully ran for state assembly in 2022 and began working for Alvarado-Gil in July of that year, could use the restroom, the lawsuit states. When he got back to the car, Alvarado-Gil’s pants were down and she “had her legs spread and turned towards him exposing her vagina,” the suit goes on.

“Her direction was for him to submit to her demand and to orally pleasure her vagina,” the suit contends. “After months of creating a dominant-submissive relationship, [Condit] was numbed and acted without thinking and it went from there with Alvarado-Gil establishing her ability to dominate him. [Condit] briefly performed as demanded until she was satisfied by his submission to her.”

Condit’s lawsuit, which was filed September 5, says he threw out his back and badly injured his hip while servicing his boss, due to “having to twist and contort in the confined space of the car.”

Alvarado-Gil “demanded this show of ‘loyalty’ on several occasions,” but the two never had intercourse, according to the suit.

Reached for comment on Monday, Alvarado-Gil’s attorney Ognian Gavrilov told The Independent, “My comment is that a disgruntled former employee has fabricated an outlandish story, presented without evidence, to get a payday. We expect that the senator will be fully cleared of any wrongdoing of these bogus, financially motivated claims.”

Condit’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment.

Condit, whose congressman father Gary was accused in 2001 of having an affair with an intern who was later found murdered, says in his lawsuit that Alvarado-Gil told him that she “assumed [he] would be like his father — insinuating that he should be open to a sexual relationship with her.” (Gary Condit never publicly admitted to the affair and was never charged in connection with the young woman’s death.)

Alvarado-Gil repeatedly crossed the line with Condit in other ways, insisting he get a haircut from her aspiring cosmetologist daughter, walk her dog, and find jobs for her family members, the lawsuit claims. She asked Condit if he was into “throuples,” and expressed her preference for “short Black men and old white guys like [Condit],” according to the suit.

Once, following “a crab feed in Mariposa,” Condit’s suit claims Alvarado-Gil stripped down to a T-shirt and tried to seduce him, telling him he “looked like Brad Pitt.” In May 2023, during the annual frog-jumping event at the California capitol, Alvarado-Gil named her frog “Chad,” the lawsuit alleges.

By the summer of 2023, other staffers were threatening to quit over what they viewed as Alvarado-Gil’s preferential treatment of Condit, the lawsuit contends. He then made clear to Alvarado-Gil that he was not comfortable with the way things were, and tried to create some space between himself and her. After Condit communicated his concerns, Alvarado-Gil not only “falsely” told his wife he was seeing someone else, she began laying the groundwork to fire him, the lawsuit states.

At the end of 2023, after Alvarado-Gil humiliated Condit — who by then was recovering from hip surgery — by convicing him to wear a Santa Claus outfit to a party where, it turned out, no one else was in costume, she terminated him via text message, according to the suit. His last day of work was December 31.

Condit now suffers from “moments of total despair, headaches, fatigue, guilt and shame, and seeks to avoid friends and family, his lawsuit states. “He showed the signs and symptoms of abuse, becoming numb, emotionally detached and depressed. The fact that he is a man, does not take away from the shame at being put into submission by his boss.”

The two sides are next scheduled to appear in court on October 17.
