Loyal fans of Bernie Sanders are insisting that the Vermont senator would have won the 2020 presidential election with a landslide result.

The Vermont senator stood unsuccessfully to be the Democratic presidential candidate in both the 2016 and 2020 election.

The senator energised young and progressive voters by championing policies like universal healthcare and taxing the wealthy, pulled out of November’s race after falling behind Joe Biden in the primaries.

With the 2020 presidential election hanging on a knife's edge, loyal Sen Sanders fans are using the moment to champion the politician saying he would have presented more virulent competition.

Prominent Black Lives Matter activist and host of current affairs podcast The Breakdown, Shaun King said: “Bernie would've won. In 2016. And he would've won today.”

American political pundit and co-host of Rising on Hill TV Krystal Ball said: “We coulda had Bernie.”

Former Congressional Candidate Sakinah Lee also championed the 79-year-old saying: “I can think of many people who would have voted for @BernieSanders but didn’t vote for @JoeBiden.”

“On the other hand I can’t think of many people who voted for Biden but wouldn’t have voted for Bernie. Yes, Bernie would have won.”

“What the Democrats needed for a landslide was a candidate who was able to unite the working class in all its diversity. That candidate wasn’t Joe Biden. It was Bernie Sanders. #Election2020 #ElectionNight,” one user, who has almost 50,000 followers, said.

Left wing campaign group the Gravel Institute went viral with a simple tweet that read: "Seriously, Bernie would have won."

After dropping out of the race in April Sen Sanders endorsed Joe Biden for president and called Mr Trump “the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country”.

Some users were not as optimistic about Sen Sanders' hypothetical chances in the current electoral climate.

“Just the fact that Trump easily won Florida by falsely accusing Biden of being a socialist when he obviously wasn’t one, should be all the proof you need that Trump would have blown out Bernie Sanders across the nation,” The Palmer Report tweeted.

“No more self-identified “socialist” candidates. Ever.”

The rally of support comes just as Sen Sanders’ accurate prediction for how Mr Trump would react on election night went viral.

In an appearance on The Tonight Show on 23 October, Sen Sanders initially said that “Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin,” would take longer to count their votes, as they would receive larger amounts of mail-in-ballots than other states.

“It could well be that at 10 o’clock on election night, Trump is winning in Michigan, he’s winning in Pennsylvania, he’s winning in Wisconsin, and he gets on the television and he says, ‘Thank you, Americans, for reelecting me. It’s all over. Have a good day,” he said.“

"But then, the next day, and the day following, all of those mail-in ballots start getting counted, and it turns out that Biden has won those states, at which point Trump says, ‘See? I told you the whole thing was fraudulent."
