From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A parent at the Ashwaubenon High School in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin alerted police early in the morning saying they saw a suspicious figure wearing all dark clothes and mask while carrying a large bag.
The person was worried that the figure was wearing a bulletproof vest or flak jacket. School officials and police immediately asked students and teachers to gather at designated rally points instead of remaining or entering the building for fear of another school shooting incident.
Local schools were also put on lockdown.
It turns out the figure was just a student wearing a plastic Darth Vader costume in honour of Star Wars Day.
The date 4 May is styled as “May the Fourth Be With You” after the famous line in the movie series, “may the force be with you.”
The school district posted on Facebook that the “student will be held accountable” since costumes are not allowed at the school, however local police will not pursue any punishment.
