Following his turn directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams helped steer the direction of future Star Wars projects, acting as producer on The Last Jedi.

However, director of the eighth instalment, Rian Johnson, who was previously reported to be handing Disney a script treatment for Episode IX, has confirmed he has nothing to do with writing the sequel.

On Twitter, he wrote to one fan asking whether Johnson would be writing a story treatment: “That's old info, I haven't been involved in writing IX.”

What this means for Episode IX is unknown. Recently, LucasFilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy revealed Princess Leia will definitely not appear in the film following Carrie Fisher’s death.

The character was long rumoured to have a highly significant role in the film; some speculators believe the film has gone through a complete re-write as a result.

Episode IX has finally been given a release date, coming sooner than expected: 24 May 2019. Numerous other Disney blockbusters were also dated, including the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film.
