Vice President Kamala Harris is under contract to sell her $800,000 San Francisco apartment.

The 56-year-old signed the deal less than a month after she took office as the US’ first female, black and south asian deputy leader.

Records show that she bought the 1,069sqft condo in 2004 for $489,000, when she was serving as the first black district attorney for California, with the city’s Superior Court House a just a mile away on foot.

The one bedroom features double-height windows and a small patio and is in the upmarket area of SOMA, where neighbours include billionaire tech companies Twitter and Uber.

It was on the market for less than a week before it sold for $799,000, according to The Wall Street Journal, and was listed by Sotheby’s International Realty.

She joins thousands of residents to sell up and leave the city in recent months, after the arrival of the pandemic sparked an exodus to less expensive cities with more space.

An estimated 89,000 households left between March 1 and November last year, according to Public Comment, which analyzed United States Postal Service data.

Since the Democrat took office on January 20 she and her husband, second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, 56, have been living at Blair House, the president’s official guest house that is opposite The White House.

The official vice president’s residence, an 1893 home called Number One Observatory Circle, is currently undergoing renovations.

The Queen Anne-style house became the official residence of the vice president in 1974, after being originally built in the grounds of the US Naval Observatory for the superintendant, with vice president Walter Mondale the first to live there in 1977.

The San Francisco condo is one of several properties owned by vice president Harris and her husband, after they married in 2014.

In Washington DC she bought a $1.7million apartment in the West End neighbourhood in 2017, when she became a senator.

The couple also own a $5million four-bedroom home in the wealthy area of Brentwood in Los Angeles, where neighbours include Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gwyneth Paltrow.

On Thursday The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that Harris was returning to her Brentwood home for a three-day personal trip with her spouse.
