Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro rips those who praised the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Police say the man arrested in Pennsylvania as a person of interest in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Monday initially cooperated with police, but was no longer talking to investigators.

Luigi Mangione, 26, was spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, by a patron who recognized him from the images circulated by the NYPD following last week’s shooting and alerted police.

He was arraigned Monday evening on gun charges and is being held without bond. Charges in New York in connection to the killing are expected to be filed “soon,” officials said.

The prep school valedictorian was carrying a ghost gun believed to be the one used in the shooting, a suppresser, “multiple fraudulent IDs,” and a handwritten, three-page manifesto that allegedly slammed the health care system. Police have not given an official motive behind the killing.

During a press conference after the arrest, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned those who had celebrated the New York shooting, calling the gunman “no hero.”

“In America, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint,” Shapiro said.

What evidence have police gleaned from the shooting suspect?

Police have gleaned a treasure trove of evidence and intel but, as the manhunt for Brian Thompson’s killer entered its sixth day on Monday morning, the suspect remains at large.

On Thursday, police revealed photographs of the assailant’s unmasked face inside the HI New York City Hostel – including one photograph of the man smiling while apparently flirting with a female employee behind the desk. On Saturday evening, the NYPD released two more photographs of the suspect in a taxi, this time sporting a blue medical face mask.

Authorities have gathered security footage between 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. from last Wednesday, tracking the suspect’s movements before he disappeared.

While searching a wooded area at the southern end of Central Park on Friday evening, police discovered a gray backpack nestled between two boulders containing two items: a Tommy Hilfiger jacket and Monopoly money.

By Saturday and Sunday, police deployed specialised teams across NYC of divers and gun-detecting dogs to look for the murder weapon.

A Starbucks water bottle, which contains the assailant’s DNA and partial fingerprints, and a discarded mobile phone were discovered in an alleyway near the crime scene on Sixth Avenue.

The killer also left behind a cryptic message at the scene, with the words “deny,” “depose,” and “defend” inscribed on live rounds and shell casing left outside.

Folk singer goes viral with song about Brian Thompson killing

Joe DeVito was on a long drive from a gig in Nashville to New York on Thursday with the news of a health insurance CEO being gunned down heavy on his mind.

He saw that people were using the death as an opportunity to express anger at the health insurance industry and share their own stories of being denied coverage for care. Along the way, in Virginia, he pulled over at a rest stop to record a song about it.

“I wanted to throw my two cents in and try and try and convey that rage, and why people are so mad,” he tells The Independent.

Richard Hall has the full story.

Brian Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, had been in New York City for a conference when he was killed in what police believe was a targeted shooting.

Among hundreds of posts on social media about the shocking murder, many people were moved to talk about the injustice of the health insurance industry. Often the dark jokes on X, Instagram, Reddit and TikTok spoke to how cruel medical insurance companies can be to their customers. Some even wrote folk songs about the event.
