California wildfires: Paradise resident films escape from blaze

At least 42 people have died in a fierce wildfire which largely incinerated the town of Paradise in northern California, the largest loss of life from such a blaze in state history.

The latest death toll, was announced by Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea at an evening news conference in the city of Chico after authorities found the bodies of 13 more victims of the devastating blaze dubbed the Camp Fire.

The fire already ranked as the most destructive on record in California in terms of property loss, having consumed more than 7,100 homes and other structures since it ignited on Thursday.

Southern California's huge Woolsey wildfire - which has killed at least two people - roared to life again Tuesday in a mountain wilderness area even as many neighbourhoods were reopened to thousands of residents who fled its advance last week.

Facebook joins Apple, Google and Cisco in their efforts to provide aid and assistance related to the California wildfires. 

Facebook said on Tuesday that they will be matching up to $500,000 of its users donations to the American Red Cross. The donation matching is in addition to the $250,000 the social media company already gave to the nonprofit organisation for wildfire relief and recovery efforts.

All donations will need to be made through Facebook's Donate Button in its Crisis Response pages for it to be eligible for the match. The Menlo Park company said more than $170,00 has been raised as of Tuesday morning.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are donating $500,000 to the Malibu Foundation on behalf of the "Wrecking Ball" singer's charity, The Happy Hippie Foundation. The couple lost their home to the wildfire.

A spokesperson for Cyrus told the Associated Press that the couple's "community and state are very special to them and they want to give back to the place that has created so many beautiful memories for themselves and others."

Sandra Bullock made a $100,000 donation to the Humane Society of Ventura County. The organisation is working on-the-ground to rescue animals affected by the wildfires. 

"Our efforts for rescuing and caring for evacuated animals from the Hill and Woolsey fires had caught her attention and her team reached out to the shelter to show their support," the organisation said on Facebook. "Sandra Bullock and her family have reached out to other nonprofit organizations both during this incident and in the past. However, this time she wanted to contribute to those on the frontline rescuing animals in peril and hope others will choose to do the same."
