Jeremy Corbyn has told Theresa May that Labour will support her if she abandons her Chequers plan and agrees to a softer Brexit.

He said his party would vote for a "sensible" deal that kept the UK in a customs union with the EU and guaranteed jobs and workers' rights.

The Labour leader also used his keynote speech to the party's annual conference in Liverpool to promise to fight antisemitism "with every breath I possess".

He told the Jewish community: "We are your ally."

Shadow justice secretary Richard Burgon said Labour's policy remained that "we accept and respect the outcome of the referendum".

Asked on LBC radio about Sir Keir Starmer leaving open the door to a second poll, he said: "Who knows where history is going to go?"

He added: "The Labour Party isn't calling for a second referendum.

"Labour has our own vision of Brexit, respecting, accepting the outcome of the referendum."

In his speech today, Corbyn is expected to say: 

“There is no bigger threat facing humanity than climate change. We must lead by example.

“Our energy plans would make Britain the only developed country outside Scandinavia to be on track to meet our climate change obligations.

“That means working with unions representing the workforce to ensure jobs and skills are protected as we move towards a low-carbon economy.

“And it means working with industry to change the way we build, and to train the workforce to retrofit homes and work in the industries we will build.

“It needs a government committed to investing in renewables, in jobs and in training.

“I can announce today that Labour will kickstart a green jobs revolution.

“Our programme of investment and transformation to achieve a 60% reduction in emissions by 2030 will create over 400,000 skilled jobs, based here and on union rates, bringing skills and security to communities held back for too long.”
