Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Boris Johnson has said he will make the NHS an "overwhelming priority" during his renewed tenure in No. 10 following a political “earthquake” which which saw Labour support give way top a comfortable Tory majority.
However he has not extended the same olive branch to voters north of the border - telling Nicola Sturgeon he would not lend any support to a second independence referendum.
Meanwhile Jeremy Corbyn has refused to take responsibility for the worst Labour showing since 1935 - blaming Brexit for the party’s devastating defeat.
Labour hold Caerphilly and Ealing North
The party has kept a seat in Wales and in London – key battlegrounds, even if these seats aren't necessarily.
Conservatives hold Rayleigh & Wickford and Bracknell
We're starting to get a run of seats now, as counts finish. Two more holds for the Tories, following those three holds for Labour.
Labour hold Knowsley
MP George Howarth keeps the seat for Labour – with a massive majority of 39,942. But that's still a reduction on 2017.
Conservatives gain Peterborough and Vale of Clwyd
Two big gains for the Tories here. Peterborough was one of the major constituencies won by Labour in 2017.
Conservatives gain Wrexham
The Tories have taken Wrexham. The Labour vote has dropped by 10 points – that's a big recurring theme of the night – with their votes being roughly equally shared between the Conservatives, Plaid Cymru, Brexit and the Lib Dems.
Labour gain Putney
The first of the Labour gains for the night comes in the London seat. Here could be where the promised gains in the cities – which could make up for the losses elsewhere in the country, a little bit – might come back.
Results begin to flood in
A lot of expected seats are coming in as expected now. The SNP get Angus; Labour hold Wigan and Rochdale; the Tories hold Harrogate & Knaresborough.
But Putney is the big upset of the last few minutes.
Alliance takes Down North
The first of the Northern Irish seats has been declared. Alliance takes Down North from the local independent, given them their second ever MP.
