From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

On Wednesday, the rapper visited the 49-year-old Tesla founder’s home and posted a picture of the occasion on Twitter.
In the image, both West and Musk are seen wearing Yeezy trainers, which West designed, black trousers, and references to the colour orange.
Musk’s black T-shirt had a picture of an orange on it, while West wore a vibrant orange zip-up jacket.
West captioned the post: “‘When you go to your boy’s house and you’re both wearing orange”.
The tweet has already garnered more than 736,000 likes and 125,000 retweets.
Musk’s girlfriend, the musician Grimes, is thought to have taken the photograph given that her reflection can be seen in the image.
Musk and West have long-admired one another, with Musk revealing that he was inspired by the rapper during a Q&A session at South BY South West (SXSW) in March 2018.
The Tesla CEO also wrote about West in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in 2015.
Musk wrote: “Kanye’s belief in himself and his incredible tenacity – he performed his first single with his jaw wired shut – got him to where he is today. And he fought for his place in the cultural pantheon with a purpose.”
“Now that he’s a pop-culture juggernaut, he has the platform to achieve just that. He’s not afraid of being judged or ridiculed in the process. Kanye’s been playing the long game all along, and we’re only just beginning to see why.”
Musk welcomed his first child with Grimes in May.
Shortly after the birth, the couple announced they had named their son X Æ A-12, an eclectic name that paid homage to the couple’s favourite aircraft, SR-17, and the Elven spelling of AI.
But they were forced to change the last bit of their son’s name due to California laws that ban the use of numbers in names.
The couple therefore decided to change their son’s name to X Æ A-XII, opting for roman numerals to represent the number 12 instead of numbers.
