On 4 May, Grimes, born Claire Elise Boucher, gave birth to a baby boy, her first child with Tesla CEO Musk.
Shortly after the birth, the couple announced they had named their son X Æ A-12, an eclectic name that paid homage to the couple’s favourite aircraft, SR-17, and the Elven spelling of AI.
However, they soon discovered they would have to change the moniker, as Californian law dictates that names written on birth certificates must be written using only the 26 alphabetical letters of the English language, although apostrophes and dashes can be included.
They therefore decided to change their son’s name to X Æ A-XII, opting for roman numerals to represent the number 12 instead of numbers.
Just under a month after the couple announced the name change, the baby’s name has been officially confirmed on his birth certificate, according to TMZ.
On the birth certificate, it states that the baby’s first name is “X”, it’s middle name is “AE A-XII” and its last name is “Musk”.
In May, Musk and Grimes revealed how to pronounce their son’s name – although both say it differently.
In response to an Instagram user’s comment, Grimes said the name is simply pronounced “X A I”, as you would typically say each of those letters.
However, during a podcast interview, Musk outlined his pronunciation of the full name, stating that the “Æ” in the name was pronounced “Ash”, rather than “AI”.
“I mean it’s just X, the letter X,” Musk said, adding: “Um, and then, the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘Ash’. And then, A-12, A-12 is my contribution,” the SpaceX CEO stated.
Therefore, Musk indicated that he would pronounce his newborn son’s name “X Ash A 12”.
Musk added that Grimes was the one of the pair who “actually, mostly, came up with the name”
On 12 May, the singer shared a video of her newborn son lying on her partner’s chest.
Musk married his first wife, author Justin Wilson, in 2000. Their first son, Nevada Alexander Musk, died when he was 10 weeks old from sudden infant death syndrome.
The couple had five more sons and separated in 2008.
