The cast of Game of Thrones have light-heartedly mocked the coffee cup blunder which occurred during the final series of the show.

On Saturday 20 July, the stars of the hit HBO fantasy drama took part in a panel event at San Diego Comic-Con.

As the actors made their way to the table in Hall H, they discovered that takeaway coffee cups had been left by their name cards.

During the fourth episode of the eighth season of Game of Thrones, eagle-eyed viewers spotted a takeaway coffee cup which had been accidentally left in shot on a table in front of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.

Numerous fans took to Twitter to express their belief over the unfortunate mistake, while the official Game of Thrones Twitter account responded by joking that Daenerys had mistakenly been served a latte when she ordered a herbal tea.

After finding the coffee cups on their Comic-Con panel table, the Game of Thrones raised a toast to the audience.

Liam Cunningham, who played Davos Seaworth from the second series, stated: "Someone left some coffee cups here. It's Dornish wine!" as he arrived with his fellow cast members.

Following the appearance of the coffee cup, Game of Thrones art director Hauke Richter explained that items can sometimes "get forgotten on set".

"[The coffee cup error has been] so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with Thrones so far," Richter told Variety.

Stacy Jones, CEO of marketing company Hollywood Branded, estimated that Starbucks acquired $2.3bn (£1.84bn) in free advertising following the coffee cup error, despite the takeaway cup not actually coming from the American coffee chain.

A coffee cup wasn't the only rogue everyday product to be mistakenly featured in the final series of Game of Thrones.

During the last episode, a water bottle was also spotted in shot behind the leg of Samwell Tarly, portrayed by John Bradley.

"First Starbucks now a water bottle this show is a joke," one person tweeted.
