Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As October gets under way, here are three full bodied whites, for appropriately autumnal foods….

From Chile...

Gran Araucaria Reserva Chardonnay 2013

There is a lovely balance to this Chardonnay from Chile’s Central Valley area: it is instantly fresh and appealing on the palate, followed by typically satisfying, but not overwhelming, tropical fruit flavours of pinapples and mangoes. Mussels with creamy sauces, fish pie or crab cakes would be ideal partners.

From Hungary...

Majoros Deak Tokaji Furmint 2011

A fine example of the largely undiscovered wines to be found in Hungary: a really full bodied, dry, ‘orange’ Furmint –a grape normally found in sweet wines - with new oak ageing delivering a smoke-scented, vanilla-tinged wine, packed with dried fruit and nut flavours. Complex and interesting. Try with smoked fish such as haddock or mackerel.

From France....

Domaine de Sainte rose Barrel Selection Roussanne 2013

From a British owned estate in the heart of the Languedoc, an object lesson in getting the most out of a grape increasingly found on its own rather than in blends. Rich, unctuous and soft, with a fresh appeal and a long finish, this is a perfect autumnal white: try with spiced pork belly and celeriac mash or with any mushroom-based dishes.
