Terry Kirby was one of the Independent's founding members of staff in 1986 and worked in a number of roles, including crime correspondent, assistant news editor and night editor. While chief reporter in the early 2000s, he first began writing about wine – a subject he was fascinated by since first visiting the south of France as a teenager – and continued to write regular features on wine for the paper after going freelance in 2007. He wrote a weekly column on wine for the Independent on Sunday Review from 2011 until 2016, which then ran in the Independent from 2016 until 2021. Since then, he has continued to contribute wine columns to the IndyBest section. He loves all types of wine, has been an enthusiastic supporter of English and Welsh sparkling wines and is always looking for new styles and wine regions to discover.
