Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Pret a Manger has announced that it will reopen 204 shops for takeaway and delivery on Monday 1 June.
The move brings the total number of reopened shops to more than 300, following the temporary closure of all outlets in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Shops will reopen for the first time in towns and cities such as Bath, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Exeter and Liverpool.
However, Pret will be offering a limited menu of some of its most popular sandwiches, salads and bakery items. This includes the Classic Super Club sandwich, Posh Cheddar & Pickle baguette, Tuna Mayo & Cucumber baguette, and Chef’s Italian Chicken Salad.
Customers will also be able to buy Pret’s new ‘Heat Me at Home’ Macaroni Cheese range and a selection of ‘Heat Me at Home’ soups, including Mushroom Risotto, Chicken & Butternut Risotto and Pea & Mint, so they can enjoy their favourite Pret dishes at home.
Orders for delivery can be made through Deliveroo, Just Eat and UberEats depending on the shop's location, the company added.
As part of the phased reopening, the company has introduced a number of new safety measures to help keep its staff and customers safe, in line with government guidance. These include installing protective perspex screens at the till counter, restricting the number of customers allowed in a shop at any one time, social distancing restrictions in kitchens and an enhanced cleaning process.
Pano Christou, the CEO of Pret, said the company is committed to rapidly transforming in light of the pandemic.
“The changes we’ve been making include new ways to serve customers and bring Pret’s products to our customers’ homes safely,” Christou said.
“It's going to continue to be tough for Pret in the months ahead, and I'd like to thank our team members who are returning to work and making reopening possible.“
Pret shops will be reopening in London and across the UK including in: Bath, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, St Andrews, Staines, Surrey, Warwick, Watford, West Sussex, Winchester, Windsor & York.
You can find a full list of shops here.
Pret follows a number of restaurants that have already started offering delivery and takeaway, including Nando’s, KFC and McDonald’s.
In March, the government told restaurants to shut their doors as part of the lockdown but have continued to allow restaurants to serve takeaway and collection services, in line with health and safety guidelines.
Pubs and restaurants are expecting to be able to reopen sites from 4 July, at the earliest.
