Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Sunday lunch

Vergelegen DNA 2009

To restore our dampened spirits in such a wet winter, a top South African producer's version of a Bordeaux blend. Dominant Cabernet Franc grapes add crunchiness to the darker Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich, warming and smoothly satisfying now; will only get better with age. £18.99, sawinesonline.co.uk; £23.21, vintagemarque.com

Midweek meal

Mencos Rioja 2012

A very modern, approachable, young Rioja, made biodynamically on an estate held by the same family since 1260. Exceptionally well made, with terrific balance between forward fruit and underlying power. Pair with a rare venison steak or duck breast. £9.95, fromvineyardsdirect.com (minimum order six mixed bottles)

Bargain basement

Extra Special Dao 2011

At this price, wines can be drinkable, but often lack real character. Not so this excellent Portuguese red made from the traditional port grapes mix. Brimming with rich dark-red fruits, herbs and a touch of bitter chocolate. Very pasta-friendly. £6,Asda
