Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It is January sales time among wine retailers as they clear shelves for new vintages. Here are three of the best online bargains around – but act fast, as stocks are mostly very limited…

Sunday lunch

Côtes du Rhône Domaine Pierre Usseglio 2010

An excellent Côtes du Rhône bottle from one of its best producers, made using mainly Grenache grapes grown close to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape area. Gorgeous herbal and floral aromas, a dark-purple colour and deep, luscious fruit flavours, a touch of pepper and plenty of backbone. Just the ticket to warm a winter's evening and wash down some confit-duck legs or a game casserole. £12.95 (was £16.95; sale ends mid-February), robersonwine.com

Midweek meal

Journey's End Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch 2006

A big, smooth, Cabernet Sauvignon from a boutique winery in the highly regarded Schapenberg Terroir, cooled by coastal breeze. Lots of upfront fruit, with characteristic touches of cassis and mint on the palate and cedar and oak on the long and satisfying finish. Open well in advance. A great wine for beef – either long-braised oxtail or a rare steak. £9.99 (was £12.95; sale ends 18 February), tanners-wines.co.uk

Bargain basement

Marques de la Sierra Blanco, Montilla-Moriles 2010

Sales offer a chance to try unusual wines at low prices, such as this Andalucian white, made using the same techniques as sherry, but without fortification. This blend of the classic sherry grape Pedro Ximénez and Chardonnay produces an intriguingly full-bodied white, fresh on the palate, with a firm, nutty, woody (but not oaky) flavour. Brilliant with almonds, goat's cheese or any fishy tapas. £4.99 (was £7.50; sale ends 1 February), cellarandkitchen.adnams.co.uk
