Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The first Bank Holiday weekend just might provide an excuse for barbecues and outdoor eating, so here are three suggestions…

A red

Aglianico Del Vulture, Taste the Difference 2009

Little known here, the Aglianico grape grown around Mount Vulture in Basilicata in southern Italy produces rich, dark, wines, with a firm tannic structure and tastes of chocolate and cherries. Great for strongly flavoured barbecued meats. £9, Sainsbury's

A white

Altano Vinho Branco Douro 2012

If you are having grilled mackerel or sardines or simply a big salad, this is a really distinctive Portugese white from the Symington port family made from local grapes Viosinho, Malvasia fina and Moscatel Galego. Herbal, smoky and aromatic, with loads of vibrant tropical fruit. £8.99, farehamwinecellar.co.uk; £9.75, davy.co.uk

A rosé

Mas De la Source Reserve Rosé 2013

At time of writing, it is difficult to predict whether it is going to be warm enough for a bottle of ice-cold rosé, but here's hoping… If you have some spicy seafood, prawns or some mixed mezze, this rosé – a zingy blend of Cinsault and Grenache – is just the ticket. £7.65, jascots.co.uk
