Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 2022 Met Gala red carpet was full of gilded glamour as guests attended fashion’s most-anticipated event of the year.

From Blake Lively to Kim Kardashian, the best-dressed stars of the Met Gala stunned in vintage dresses and multiple outfit changes.

The theme of the evening’s Met Gala was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the second part of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, which opened on 18 September. The first part of the exhibition was reflected in last year’s Met Gala theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which was in celebration of all things American Fashion.

Last year, the Met Gala took place on 13 September and the year before, it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Usually, around 600 celebrities are invited to mark the glitzy event in their social calendars, but this year and last, the numbers are closer to 400.

As per tradition, the guest list for this year’s event was carefully presided over by Vogue’sAnna Wintour, who has run the gala since 1995. It was announced earlier this year that the 2022 hosts would include Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who served as the night’s official co-chairs.

Since 1995, the guest list has been carefully presided over by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour and this year is no different. Only those who have received Wintour’s approval will get an opportunity to attend the fundraising event, which raises a reported $3.5m (£2.69m).

The Met Gala 2022 co-chairs Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have arrived.

Blake Lively looked regal in Versace as she performed the first red carpet outfit change of the night, while Ryan Reynolds stayed on theme with the evening’s white-tie dress code. The actress, 34, was dressed in a shimmery floor-length rose gold gown before she unveiled its layered turquoise skirt. The Versace dress is inspired by famous New York City landmarks, including Grand Central Station, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building.

Eagle-eyed fans also noticed Reynold’s adorable reaction to his wife’s quick outfit change. Reynolds was captured looking on, clapping and smiling as his wife changed outfits on the iconic Met steps.

The dress code for this year’s Met Gala is gilded glamour, white-tie. Guests are asked to look to the Gilded Age of New York for inspiration, a time period that spanned from 1870 to 1890 and saw a boom in industrialisation, and, as a result, prosperity.

The comedian wore a black long-sleeved gown, which featured a double-breasted blazer-inspired bodice and tassels, designed by Carolina Herrera. Schumer completed the look with a pair of black sunglasses.

Fans took to Twitter to share their opinions Schumer’s look for the event, which has a “gilded glamour” dress code. The outfit drew comparisons to Harry Potter’s Severus Snape and the series Pretty Little Liars.

The former Secretary of State was dressed in an off-the-shoulder dress designed by Joseph Altuzarra. The 25-year-old model, who suffered from “stroke-like symptoms” in March, spoke candidly about her hospitalisation in a YouTube video posted last week titled “Telling my story”.

Speaking to Vanessa Hudgens on the Met Gala red carpet, Bieber said that it felt “freeing” to bring attention to her health journey.

“It was a really scary experience but if it can help anybody bring light to the situation,” she said. “I just wanted to share my story and it felt freeing to share it.”

Met Gala 2022 honours the legacy of fashion icon André Leon Talley, who passed away in January.

Fashion luminaries from Naomi Campbell to Anna Wintour attended Talley’s memorial service at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem on Friday, 29 April.

Talley has been a longtime supporter of the Met’s Costume Institute, since he began working for Diana Vreeland at the institute in 1974. The museum has paid tribute to Talley by adding his iconic Ralph Rucci robes to its newest exhibit, which he wore to the Met Gala in 2010.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Questlove also referenced Talley by wearing the writer’s black collared coat to the Met Gala
