From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Chrissy Teigen has hit back at online trolls who criticised her body shape.

On Sunday, the former model shared a short video of herself on Twitter posing in front of a mirror wearing a plunging black swimsuit as she joked: “I don’t normally post thirst traps”.

While many of Teigen’s followers praised the mother-of-two for promoting body confidence and delivering her signature style of humour, the post, which has since garnered more than 82,000 likes, also received a number of negative comments.

The clip prompted an outburst of bodyshaming from Twitter users, with one person saying Teigen was “shaped like Sponge Bob” and another commenting that her breasts were “sagging”.

A number of Teigen’s fans were quick to criticise the trolls, with one person writing: “So, @chrissyteigen posted a quick vid of herself in a body suit & the world went on attack [sic].

“Men & women both throwing insults. I only WISH I could look like her! When did all these asshats become walking perfect Ken and Barbies? #douchebags.”

Acknowledging the tweet, Teigen hit back at the trolls, writing: “Everyone [is] used to...surgically enhanced curves. I've been a square my whole life and let me tell you, it's paid off nicely in many ways.”

She continued: “Imagine if one day I showed up with hips and an ass. Ooooo you guys would be pissed then too! I'm happy, John's happy, we all happy and doing a-okay! [sic].”

Actor and activist Jameela Jamil also chimed in on the criticism, tweeting: “I loved the video. Didn't see a shape. Just saw fire.”

After seeing Jamil's support, Teigen thanked The Good Place star and admitted to her that over time she “has gotten used to [her] right angle bod”.

“You'd think people have seen it enough that it doesn't shock them anymore but nope lol,” she concluded.

This is not the first time Teigen has publicly defended herself following negative comments from online trolls.

Last year, the television host was praised for her response to an Instagram comment that criticised her for employing hired help.

The cookbook author shared a photo of her and John Legend’s two children, Luna and Miles, posing alongside the family’s household staff to Instagram.

Teigen captioned the photo: “Grateful for people that make our dysfunctional house functional.”

In response to the image, one person commented: “Aka ‘Thankful for my household staff of chefs and nannies'.”

The remark prompted Teigen to sarcastically write back: “Literally just said that but you sure got me.”
