Hamilton could do nothing to stop the Racing Point of Lance Stroll power to pole position, the first of his Formula One career, with the Canadian pipping Max Verstappen to top spot in what proved a rain-delayed qualifying session. Stroll’s teammate Sergio Perez starts third, with Alex Albon and Daniel Ricciardo also starting in front of champion-elect Hamilton.
The championship leader only needs to finish ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas - who starts down in ninth - to win the seventh title, with the Finn needing to finish in the top six to have any chance of taking the championship fight to Bahrain in two weeks’ time. However, the tricky conditions in Istanbul is set to deliver a fascinating race this morning. Follow the live action below.

Albon gets past Vettel with ease, and Hamilton is straight back onto the Ferrari in a battle renewed.
Bottas meanwhile has spun for the third time today and drops four places down to 15th in what is proving a disastrous day for the championship contender.

Hamilton goes for the move on Vettel into Turn 12 … and messes it up! He runs deep and off the track and it allows Albon to take fifth from the Mercedes driver. Incredibly, Hamilton still sets the fastest lap of the race in the process.

Virtual Safety Car! Giovinazzi has suffered a mechanical failure and pulls over to retire, and the race is neutralised while his Alfa Romeo is retrieved.

Turkish Grand Prix: Lap 13
Vettel goes deep into Turn 12, but Hamilton can’t take advantage as the Ferrari just holds on. Albon pits from the lead but he’s suffered massively there and drops to sixth place behind Hamilton.

Verstappen pits but Albon continues, and Red Bull are under pressure to deliver here. Where is he … he’s ahead of Vettel! The overcut works but Perez, Verstappen, Vettel and Hamilton are all line astern on track.

Red Bull are ordering Verstappen to pit, and for his chances of not dropping down the field he’s got to come in now otherwise Hamilton will be in front of him. He could drop from fourth to sixth here once the stops cycle through.

The inters are working as Leclerc sets the new fastest lap of the race by a mile. Verstappen doesn’t want to stop, and he responds with a 1:48.6s to set his own fastest lap of the race. Perez and Ricciardo stop … and Hamilton goes three seconds faster than Verstappen in a single lap! Verstappen has to pit now.
