The six-time world champion is bidding to match Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven titles, and a victory today will take him a giant step closer towards achieving that honour, with the Mercedes driver already holding a 47-point advantage in the standings. He is also just two race wins away from Schumacher’s tally of 91 career victories, and should he triumph today, he could end up equalling that record next weekend.
His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas starts alongside him on the front row, but Hamilton’s nearest challenger in Max Verstappen will only start in fifth after the Red Bull qualified behind Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez, leaving the Dutchman with plenty of work to do if he is to secure a podium finish on the high-speed track. RED FLAG
The cars are fired up and safety car leads them out of the pits and on their way to the grid, as we’re restarting with a standing start.
Get the popcorn ready…
RED FLAG
The race will restart at 3:20pm, in just under 10. minutes’ time.
RED FLAG
Where does this leave us?
Hamilton is first, but will need to serve a stop-and-go penalty that will drop him to last when the race restarts, That will release Lance Stroll in second, and while he has not yet pitted, the rules allow him to change tyres during the red flag period. That means he will inherit the lead on fresh tyres, and now appears to be favourite too win the race. Gasly in second HAS pitted and is sitting nicely in third, with Giovinazzi to serve the same penalty as Hamilton which will lift Raikkonen to fourth and Sainz into fifth.
RED FLAG
The accident that brought out the red flag, which could have been a lot worse in the outcome.
RED FLAG
Right, let’s catch up on what’s just happened:
Magnussen’s retirement brought out the safety car.
Hamilton and Giovinazzi both pitted while the pits was shut, because Magnussen’s car was stopped near the entry.
Upon the restart, Leclerc lost the rear end on the exit of the Parabolica, and while it wasn’t another brake failure - meaning he was going considerably slower than first feared - he shot off the track and into the tyre barrier at high speed.
The race was then red flagged to repair the tyre barrier, and Hamilton and Giovinazzi were both handed 10-second penalties.
Lando Norris is also under investigation for slowing down unnecessarily and backing up the pack when McLaren doubled-pitted him and Sainz.
RED FLAG
Lewis Hamilton and Antonio Giovinazzi is handed a 10-second stop/go penalty!
