The Nurburgring’s return to the Formula One calendar for the first time in seven years has not been short on drama, with Friday’s running completely washed out and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll ruled out with illness, meaning another call-up for Nico Hulkenberg in his place.
Qualifying also produced a surprise as Bottas left his rivals in his dust, producing a lap nearly 0.4s faster than championship leader Hamilton, who just squeezed onto the front row ahead of Red Bull’s Verstappen. There was also welcome relief for Ferrari with Charles Leclerc taking fourth ahead of the second Red Bull of Alex Albon, ahead of the two Renaults, but Sebastian Vettel starts outside of the top 10 once again after qualifying 11th. Follow live updates below.
LAP 22
Albon is having a nightmare out there, as he flat spots yet another set of tyres in trying an audacious move on Gasly in the battle for eighth. Gasly just gets away with it as he gives Albon space, before maintaining position. Albon is certainly feeling the pressure:
“They race me so hard.”
LAP 22
Unsurprisingly it’s a 10-second time penalty for Raikkonen, which seems fair to me.
LAP 20 STANDINGS
1. Hamilton
2. Verstappen +2.3s
3. Norris +24.4s
4. Perez +26.5s
5. Ocon +32.1s
6. Sainz +34.2s
7. Ricciardo +40.3s
8. Gasly +44.2s
9. Albon +45.3s
10. Leclerc +49.4s
LAP 18
Bottas has an engine problem! He reports no power, and he’s going backwards as Norris and Perez pass the struggling Mercedes!
Meanwhile, Albon hits a struggling Kvyat after the AlphaTauri missed the last chicane, and he rips the front wing off Kvyat, who misses the pit entry and has to do a full lap before pitting, with the front wing left on the start-finish straight.
LAP 17
The Virtual Safety Car is deployed for Russell’s car, and Hamilton and Verstappen pit that will keep them well in front of Bottas. The VSC is ended immediately after the stops, so Hamilton continues to lead from Verstappen and now Norris.
LAP 15
Ouch. Russell challenges the back of Vettel, and from nowhere he gets bumped into the air as Raikkonen locks up and oversteers into the Williams. It’s snapped the rear suspension on Russell’s car, and that will be enough to retire the Briton from the race.
LAP 13
Hamilton…takes the lead! Bottas locks up horribly into Turn One, and Hamilton pulls alongside and sweeps around the outside to take the lead of the Grand Prix! That’s a massive flat spot too, and he’s pitting at the end of the lap.
