Hamilton blitzed his way to pole position on Saturday, lapping more than half-a-second faster than second-placed Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen in third. However, the long run from Turn One through Eau Rouge and up to Les Combes offers the chance for those behind the leader to attack, as we’ve seen countless times in the past.
But there is also the threat of rain, with showers expected before the start of the race and sunny weather expected after to trigger a drying track. With Daniel Ricciardo in the low-downforce Renault in fourth, it could be a topsy-turvy opening lap at Spa. Follow the live updates below.
Lap 19: They may be struggling immensely, but the Ferraris are having a right ding dong between themselves and Leclerc tries to pass Vettel around the outside of Les Combes. That's a tricky move at the best of times, and Vettel firmly closes the door as they cut back for the left-hander, which narrowly avoids contact between them.
Lap 18: Perez now pits. That was a bizarre strategy, and even if they put him onto the hard tyres - which they have - to go to the end of the race, he's now last.
Lap 17: Gasly's hard tyres in fourth are holding on nicely, but Perez's soft tyres aren't and it allows Ricciardo to get a run up Eau Rouge and pass comfortably before they get to Les Combes. Albon also gets by with a lovely move around the outside of the bus stop chicane and moves up to sixth.
Lap 16: Hamilton is told the news he wants to hear, it was just energy harvesting and nothing to worry about. He needs to worry about Bottas behind though as he puts in the fastest lap of the race. Down the order, Raikkonen passes Vettel and then Leclerc, and that's the customer team past the works Ferrari. It's getting embarrassing...
Lap 16: Urgent radio message from Hamilton:
"Loss of power."
He looks ok for now - was that a temporary glitch?
Lap 15: Hamilton gets a perfect restart and Bottas is caught napping, putting Verstappen right on his tail. The Red Bull can't do anything up the hill though and Bottas gets away, while Perez challenges Gasly in the battle for fourth. The Racing Point hits a whopping 215mph, but its not enough to pass by the end of the Kemmel Straight.
