Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Autumn 2016 nails are all about extremes. From dark, gothic graphite blacks and rouge noir shades, to soft, youthful pale pinks and nudes, here is our pick of the best.
1. YSL La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer in Noir Over Noir: £19, John Lewis
The blackest of blacks, this is edgy utilitarian at its most sensual. Rich and high in pigment you only need one coat and the brush is so perfectly proportioned, three quick strokes and each nail is immaculate. Roland Mouret, Marc Jacobs, Emanuel Ungaro and Zac Posen all sent girls onto the catwalk with a gothic, blackened manicure.
2. Nails Inc Paint Can in Good As Gold: £10, Look Fantastic
Add some festive cheer to nails this season with a show-stopping, glittering gold, as seen at Topshop Unique, Dries van Noten and LaQuan Smith. Try this spray polish for a fast, professional finish – simply spritz, leave to dry for a few minutes and any colour on the skin can simply be washed off with soap and water. If you want a more traditional varnish in a beautiful metallic gold go for the Nails Inc Gel Effect Fuelled by Charcoal in Crown Place (£15).
3. OPI Nail Lacquer in We The Female: £12.50, Look Fantastic
Get the deep plum shade from the runways at Preen and Rodarte with this rich-red, dark raspberry garnet shade. Super rich, long-lasting and chip-resistant with great pigment pay-out. These are luxury nail polishes at affordable prices.
4. Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in Lady Luck: £7.99, Superdrug
Jeremy Scott sent his girls out with an iridescent pearly peach shade on the nails – an unusual choice for autumn winter, as corals are usually reserved for tanned toes and hands. But in true Scott-style it worked. Get the look with this long-wearing, incredibly chip-resistant polish.
5. Marc Jacobs Enamored Hi-Shine Lacquer in 208 Peep: £15, John Lewis
Creamy nude, square and tidy at Dior, sheer-pink, clean and simple at Stella McCartney and equally minimalist at Chanel, Valentino and Nina Ricci. If the vampy dark reds and blacks aren't your style, then go pretty on the nails with this soft pink.
6. Bobbi Brown Nail Polish in Wine: £12.50, Bobbi Brown
Dark, gothic plum shades were seen at Rodarte and Emanuel Ungaro, so get the look with this deep burgundy black, high-shine, glossy nail polish.
7. Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in 184 Frill Seeker: £9.99, Superdrug
New York designer LaQuan Smith sent models out wearing a matte taupe on the nails. Not an easy shade and texture to find, but this will achieve the look of simple but beautiful nails.
8. Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab Pro Colour Polish in All Night Long: £18, Look Fantastic
A black base with a hint of bronze shimmer adds some festive sparkle to the dark edgy shades seen across the runways this season. If you prefer less shimmer, go for Out of The Woods – a deep, simmering chocolate brown. High-gloss with a cushioned gel finish to add plumpness to the nails. These polishes contain a powerhouse of 10 active ingredients to help care for the nail, including Keratin and evening primrose.
9. Oliver Bonas Nailmatic Blush Nail Varnish Set: £16, Oliver Bonas
Combining three of this season's main trends – a natural pink blush, a deep purple and a festive glittery gold – this set will ensure your nails are on trend, at all times, and affordably so.
