Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. While this may sound a little trivial, having nice nails is one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2024. Don’t eye roll too much, I am a beauty editor, after all, and having nibbled, nobbly nails just doesn’t seem to send the right message in this line of work.
Always one to avoid the salon, to try and save time, money and the cuticle work that sends shivers down my spine, regular polish is my best port of call, and trust me when I say I’ve tried dozens of options.
One brand that always seems to come out on top, with striking shades that are long-lasting and incredibly easy to use, is Leighton Denny. If you’ve not heard of this name-sake label, allow me to gush about it.
Founded by a former forklift truck driver who very successfully swivelled into the beauty world – Leighton was even the first nail expert to be awarded an MBE, by Queen Elizabeth II, back in 2015. The vegan nail range has won a whole host of beauty awards, too.
While it may not be one of the first nail polish brands that springs to mind for many, any DIY mani fan is sure to want to give this brand a go – particularly when it comes to the pearly white shade that can be worn year-round.

Leighton Denny nail polish, glazed expression: £11.75, Amazon.co.uk
This shade sits somewhere in between Hailey Bieber’s shimmery glazed doughnut nails and the bright white colour many people gravitate towards during the summer months. It’s what I’d call a winter white with a pearlescent finish that’s perfect for this time of year.
To completely cover the nail, you will need around three coats to get the shimmer to look more striking but I’ve found there’s little need for a base coat and I often also forgo a top coat, too (although, it doesn’t last as long before chipping without one). If you’re looking to add a little sparkle to any other shade, a thin layer of glazed expression on top will also work wonders.
Thanks to the long, wide applicator brush, all the Leighton Denny shades are incredibly easy to apply, whether you’re a well-versed DIY manicurist or it’s your first foray into painting your nails. I find this helps make getting the perfect application quick and easy. As with any white shade, it will show up any lumps and bumps more clearly, so be sure to take your time to try and perfect the polish.
