From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The latest celebrity to be voted off this year’s Strictly Come Dancing has been revealed.

Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley is the fifth contestant to leave the BBC competition after scoring the lowest number of votes alongside sports presenter Mike Bushell, who found himself in the dance off with professional dancer Katya Jones.

Both Motsi Mabuse and Bruno Tonioli opted to save Tyldesley from elimination, but it was Shirley Ballas’s deciding vote as head judge that sent her home after Craig Revel Horwood opted to save Bushell.

Speaking about her time on the show, Tyldesley said: “I never thought I’d say this, [but] I’m going to keep it up because I fell in love with it. I’ve loved every second.”

Referring to Johannes Radebe, the professional she was paired with, the actor added: “This man has changed my life.”

This year’s series was South African dancer Radebe’s first appearance on the UK version of the show.

Last night’s episode saw RuPaul’s Drag Race star Michelle Visage top the leaderboard, with Kelvin Fletcher following close behind.

Bottom of the leaderboard was Chris Ramsey and his dance partner Karen Hauer.

Sailing through to next week was Viscountess Emma Weymouth, who was “devastated” after finding herself at the centre of a voting scandal.

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday on BBC One at 7.15pm
