From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. While Carol Kirkwood may have been the bookies favourite to leave Strictly Come Dancing after her low scoring rumba in Saturday night’s Halloween-themed night, it was Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher who left the competition.
Kirsty and partner Brendan Cole's Charleston to Bad Romance by Lady Gaga had only scored 17 the previous night, with Bruno saying: "You made mincemeat out of that, what a mess, it went wrong but you saved it by the skin of your teeth.”
They faced Jamelia and professional partner Tristan MacManus in the dance off, Jamelia doing the Jive to “The Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is the second week in a row the British singer has been in the bottom two, having faced off competition from Ainsley Harriott the previous Sunday.
It was a unanimous decision from the judges who all decided Kirsty’s dance was the weaker of the two, Craig saying: “Well both couples actually raised their game enormously and it was just so wonderful to see everyone dancing like that but I would like to save Jamelia and Tristan.”
Darcey added: “Again they did perform so much better, they upped their game and it’s very hard but the couple I would like to save is Jamelia and Tristan.”
After hearing the judges results, Kirsty was asked by host Tess Dal if she had enjoyed his time on the show, she said: “It’s been a wonderful experience but Jamelia deserves it more than me and I really mean that, she’s a very natural dancer. I did my best but it was time to go!
“My Strictly highlight was the Viennese Waltz, it was a wonderful week and it went really well, it felt great and it was a good dance for me.
“I just want to say thank you to Brendan who’s been incredible and I really mean that. He’s an incredible friend and dancer and so supportive.”
Brendan added: “When we got partnered up together I was very excited and I’ve seen somebody who had no dance experience and not really any performing experience, turn it around and become quite a performer. I’m so proud of that last performance and I’m proud of you.”

James Morrison also performed, singing his new single “Demons”. He was joined on the dance floor by professional dancers Kristina Rihanoff and Gleb Savchenko.
