Stephen Colbert has condemned Donald Trump’s surprise Facebook speech as “a rambling mess of lies” by “a petty, angry man desperate for validation”.

Yesterday (2 December), the US president appeared in a pre-recorded 46-minute video published to Facebook in which he repeated baseless claims of voter fraud.

In the video, Trump called votes for Joe Biden “corrupt and irregular”, claiming: “When they get caught, they’re terminated, and I very easily win [the election].”

Responding to the video on his late night talk show, Colbert called the speech “uncut, blue flake crazy packed into a straw and blown right into the brainstem of the kamikaze MAGA dead-enders”.

Colbert clarified specific moments in the video, including Trump’s claim that he was about to make “the most important speech” of his presidency.

“It may be the most impotent speech you’ve ever made,” Colbert mocked. “Because it was just another rambling mess of lies that lasted a full 46 minutes. My big complaint? He should have done this a week ago, not because he said anything worth hearing, but at least the people who cancelled a big family Thanksgiving could have pretended they were still eating with their racist uncle.”

Colbert did at least praise Trump for “a surprising amount of self-awareness” after the president said that he expected his speech to be “demeaned and disparaged”.

“The president even knew how poorly his stupidity would be received,” Colbert said. “Well, as long as it’s OK: you’re a petty, angry man desperate for validation you will never receive, and have never deserved. And in 50 days, you’ll be out of the White House, without the protections of executive power and no court is going to uphold you pardoning yourself. Plus you’re ugly and your mother dresses you funny.”

Trump’s speech was called “one of the most baseless” that he has ever given, by PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor, who added: “He’s making baseless claims that courts, the AG & DHS have said didn’t happen.”

CNN journalist Jake Tapper tweeted that the video left Trump looking like the “sorest loser” in presidential history.
