Sarah Jessica Parker has said that the Covid-19 pandemic will “obviously” play a role in the forthcoming Sex and the City reboot.

Parker will return as sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw in the limited series And Just Like That…, alongside original co-stars Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Kim Cattrall has declined to return to the series.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Parker confirmed that a “diverse” all-women writers room has joined showrunner Michael Patrick King for the revival. She also wondered where the characters may have ended up in 2021.

“Who are they in this world now? Have they adapted? What part have they played? Where have they fallen short as women, as friends, and how are they finding their way?” the actor asked.

Of Carrie specifically, Parker asked: “Where is she professionally? How have all of these political changes affected her work? Is she still writing a column? Has she written any more books? Or does she have a podcast?”

Parker also appeared to confirm that the reboot will take place in the Covid-19 era and will reference the pandemic.

“[Coronavirus will] obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in,” Parker added. “And how has that changed relationships once friends disappear? I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.”

And Just Like That… will begin filming in the spring. Cattrall, who had a public falling-out with Parker in 2018, confirmed then that she was uninterested in returning to the Samantha role.

In a comment on her Instagram, Parker wrote of the revival: “Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”

On Saturday (30 January), the US comedy series Saturday Night Live referenced the reboot in a sketch imagining Cattrall singing along to the show’s theme music.
