Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

If there was ever a time the world needed Jon Stewart’s witty, straight-forward, political thinking, it was now. Unfortunately, though, he’s retired and living in a cabin in the woods.

Fortunately, Stephen Colbert’s on the case; having discovered where Stewart was hiding out on Monday, he managed to somehow persuade the ex-The Daily Show host to appear on his show and give a fantastic monologue on the current political state in America.

The segment focussed entirely on Donald Trump and Fox news anchor Sean Hannity, who he dubbed ‘Lumpy’ the entire time. Stewart spoke about Hannity’s hypocrisy in criticising Barack Obama for doing certain things - such as using a teleprompter - while praising Trump for doing the same thing.

Stewart quipped: “I’m sure it’s easy for people without ethics or principles to embrace someone who embodies everything they said they hated about the previous president for the past eight years.”

In the final part of the 10-minute routine, Stewart relayed a message to Trump supporters: “This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it! You don’t own patriotism, you don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for military, police, and firefighters.

“Trust me. I saw a lot of people on the Convention floor in Cleveland with their ‘blue lives matter’ rhetoric, who remained silent or actively fought against the 9/11 first responders bill reauthorisation. I see you and I see your bullsh*t.”

Recently, Late Night hosts ridiculed Melania Trump, while SNL took to the Convention floor to play ‘Trumpermon Go’.
