John Reilly, a veteran actor best known for starring in US soap opera General Hospital for over a decade, has died aged 84.

His daughter Caitlin confirmed the news, but no cause of death has yet been announced.

She wrote on Instagram: “John Henry Matthew Reilly AKA Jack. The brightest light in the world has gone out. Imagine the best person in the world. Now imagine that person being your dad. I’m so grateful he was mine. I’m so grateful I got to love him. I’m so grateful I made it in time to hold him and say goodbye.”

The post continued: “I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do, but I know he’ll be with me. I love you forever Daddy.”

The Chicago-born actor joined General Hospital in 1984 as World Security Bureau agent Sean Donely, and reprised his role in a spin-off.

He also appeared on the soap As the World Turns as Dr Dan Stewart and starred in shows How the West Was Won, Quincy ME and Dallas.

Reilly voiced superhero Hawkeye on the animated Iron Man, played Kelly Taylor’s father on Beverly Hills, 90210 and appeared in daytime dramas Sunset Beach and Passions.

Reilly is survived by his wife Liz and three daughters.
