After months of rumours that the Nineties sitcom would be returning, plans were confirmed on Sunday night (10 January) when three of the four stars of the original show – Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis – shared a trailer for the series on social media.
The reboot will be titled And Just Like That… and will not star Kim Cattrall, who played the sex-loving, high-flying PR woman Samantha Jones, and who has been engaged in a feud with Parker over the years.
Many fans of the show are up in arms over Cattrall’s absence from the series, with one tweeting: “There’s no Sex and the City without Samantha.”
Referencing how the other three lead characters, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, treat Samantha in the show, another added: “I hope Samantha found a friend group that doesn't spend a majority of brunch slut-shaming her.”
Others called for Cattrall to get her own spin-off show.
Parker and Cattrall have been embroiled in a feud for many years. In 2018, Cattrall criticised her former co-star for getting in touch following the untimely death of her brother, Chris.
She called it “a painful reminder of how cruel [she] really [was]” during their time on the show, adding: “I don't need your love or support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.”
Cattrall capped it with a link to a New York Post article published in October 2017 that detailed the alleged dissolution of their friendship.
Parker has continually denied rumours of negative feelings towards Cattrall.
The hit HBO series originally ran for six seasons, from 1998 to 2004. It spawned two films, in 2008 and 2010.
Based on the book by Candace Bushnell, the series followed a sex and relationships columnist, Carrie Bradshaw, and her group of successful, fashionable girlfriends.
The new show will comprise of ten, half-hour episodes, and is scheduled to begin production in late spring in New York this year.
