Seinfeld actor John Hurley has said that he is “embarrassed” for Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack after they suggested that celebrity donors to the Donald Trump 2020 campaign be named and blacklisted.

Hurley, who portrayed eccentric lifestyle catalogue owner J Peterman on the long-running sitcom, told Fox News that the pair were “pushing a case that falls apart from the sheer weight of its lunacy, as though the Hollywood community needs to be purged of this social and intellectual hygiene problem called conservative thinking”.

Hurley added, “I think there is a nature among liberal thinkers to form packs, to form groups, whereas the conservative mind is basically an individual, and they’re tougher to find… Let me just say I’m embarrassed for both of them… It’s very difficult to be a conservative in Hollywood. Even though there are many of us, you do feel you are an island fighting the storm. All viewpoints must be observed and respected.”

The Will & Grace stars earned criticism over the weekend after tweeting their thoughts on a forthcoming campaign event in Los Angeles for Trump’s re-election. “Please print a list of all attendees please,” Messing tweeted, “The public has a right to know”.

McCormack additionally requested that the entertainment industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter “kindly report on everyone attending this event, so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with. Thx.”

A White House official later said in a statement that the pair’s comments were “somewhere between intolerance and idiocy, but that’s Hollywood”.
