Debra Messing fired back at Donald Trump after he criticised the Will & Grace star on social media.

The president lashed out after she said that attendees at an upcoming Trump fundraiser being held to coincide with the Emmy Awards should be named and shamed.

"Please print a list of all attendees please. The public has a right to know," she tweeted on Friday.

Trump responded on Sunday morning and claimed that Messing had once “profusely thanked me, even calling me Sir” but said: “How times have changed."

He tweeted: “I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do The Apprentice, and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC’s failed lineup greatly, @DebraMessing came up to me at an Upfront & profusely thanked me, even calling me “Sir.” How times have changed!”

Having caught the president’s attention, Messing fired back with a “list of souls lost to preventable devastating gun violence".

She wrote: “America wants universal background checks. The majority of Americans want assault weapons ban. Take Action and I’ll call you Sir.”

Trump’s interaction with Messing was the latest in a weekend of controversial actions.

After he cancelled a trip to Poland to help commemorate the Nazi invasion, which sparked the Second World War, to focus on the threat from Hurricane Dorian, he ended up spending the day playing golf.

His game in Virginia coincided with the latest mass shooting, in Odessa, Texas, which killed five people and left more than 20 wounded.
