Phoebe Waller-Bridge thanking Obama in her acceptance speech

Phoebe Waller-Bridge made a raunchy joke about Barack Obama in her hilarious acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.

The actor and writer of BBC comedy series Fleabag, which won Best TV Show – Comedy or Musical, thanked the former US president for naming the series as one of his favourites of 2019.

“I would like to thank Obama for putting us on his list,” she said, adding: “And as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine.”

In the very first episode of the comedy show, Waller-Bridge’s character is caught by her boyfriend masturbating to a video of Obama giving a speech.

Responding to laughs from the crowd, the actor said: “If you don’t get that joke, please watch season one of Fleabag really, really quickly.”

Earlier in the ceremony, Waller-Bridge took home the prize for Best Actress.

Earlier in the evening, Russell Crowe accepted his speech via a poignant letter he wrote while “protecting his family” from the bushfires back in his home country of Australia.

The ceremony’s top prizes went to First World War drama 1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which won Best Film in their respective Drama and Comedy categories.

Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony and immediately shocked with a joke about Leonardo DiCaprio’s 22-year-old girlfriend, Camila Morrone, and Prince Andrew.
