'Game of Thrones' leads the nominees, closely followed by 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards are almost here.
After being ineligible last year, Game of Thrones is expected to once again dominate, the HBO series’ seventh season having the most nominations of any show and already having seven statuettes thanks to the Creative Arts Emmys.
Looking to upset the fantasy drama is The Handmaid’s Tale, last year’s big winner, which could steal a few victories away thanks to its own critically successful second series. Both series will no doubt be the talk of America’s biggest TV event of the year.
So, when does the event start? How can you watch from the UK? How could history be made at the event? Who is nominated? Here’s everything you need to know about the event.
When do the Emmys start?
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards start tonight (17 September) at 17.00 PT and runs until 20.00 PT.
For UK viewers, that means staying awake until the early hours of tomorrow (18 September) as the ceremony does not kick off until 01.00 BST and finishes at 04.00 BST.
How to watch the Emmys
Those of you based in the US can watch the awards live on NBC, with E! doing red carpet coverage for two hours before kick-off. The streaming services Hulu, DirecTV Now, Philo TV, and SlingTV will also be live-streaming the ceremony.
Across the pond, UK viewers will struggle to catch the whole ceremony as there’s no official live stream. Sky One will be showing a highlights version of the ceremony at 22.00 BST later in the day. You can, however, follow all the latest action on The Independent‘s live blog.
Who is hosting?
Michael Che and Colin Jost, best known for Saturday Night Live’s weekly Weekend Update, are hosting proceedings, marking their first time hosting a major awards ceremony.
How could history be made?
The Creative Arts Emmys that took place just over a week ago saw and, for the first time ever, four black actors won all four of the best guest appearance catagories. They also saw John Legend become the first ever black male to win an EGOT – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
The Primetime ceremony could also be historic for diversity. Should Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh win the Emmy for lead actress in a drama, she would become the first person of Asian descent to ever take home the award. She faces stiff competition from the likes of Claire Foy (The Crown) and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), but considering the rave reviews Killing Eve has received (read our five-star review here), Oh could very win the coveted statuette.
