Last year's Emmys belonged squarely to both American Crime Story and Game of Thrones, the latter becoming the most successful drama in the awards' history.

However, neither of those series are around to compete this year, with Game of Thrones' delay shifting it out of the timespan for eligibility; that leaves a very convenient gap for a new victor to emerge triumphant.

Speaking strictly in nominations, it would appear that successor is HBO's Westworld, which was heavily pushed, in fact, as a hopeful replacement for the network when Game of Thrones finally takes its bow with season 8.

Netflix's The Crown could also turn out a major winner on the night, thanks to its ultra-prestige friendly look at the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In comedy terms, Veep is looking like the contender-to-beat for the night, though Master of None, Atlanta, and Black-ish could also come out strong.

Some of the biggest snubs this year include The Leftovers, The Americans, Insecure's star and co-creator Issa Rae, and Girls. Looks like the disadvantage of it being the 'Golden Age of Television' is that plenty are getting left out in the cold when it comes to awards season.
