Disney+ has racked up 10 million subscribers just a day after its launch, according to the streaming platform’s parent company.

The Walt Disney Company released the number on Wednesday, rejoicing about what it described as “extraordinary consumer demand”.

This is despite technical issues that left many users frustrated as they struggled to access the platform in the hours that followed the launch.

With 10 million subscribers, Disney already has acquired a significant chunk of the 60 to 90 million users it aims to attract around the world by 2024.

Netflix, one of Disney+’s fiercest competitors in the streaming wars, had 158 million members as of October, according to its Q3 earnings report.

Hulu, another big streaming name, had 28 million as of May.

Disney+, which features classic Disney films as well as programmes from the Marvel, Pixar, LucasFilm and Fox catalogues, launched in the US on 12 November.

It will become available in the UK on 31 March, 2020.
