At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Britney Spears has kickstarted her 2016 by getting stuck up a tree in Las Vegas.

The Nineties pop singer was performing “Toxic” during her Piece of Me residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino when a mechanical failure caused her to be left stranded on a platform attached to the prop.

Spears was supposed to fly over her fans on a harness while singing the 2004 hit but it soon became clear that she wasn’t going anywhere, forcing her to carry on like a pro and keep up her energetic dance moves, hair whipping and all.

It was only when a backstage crew member ran up the stairs to assist her out of the safety gear so she could continue her performance on the ground.

This is what was meant to happen...

Spears, who recently extended her contract to perform at the casino for another two years, is no stranger to stage mishaps after her outfit came unzipped during a show last October. She was also forced to cancel two concerts in May after falling and injuring her ankle.

The 34-year-old is believed to earn around $15 million a year from her Las Vegas sets, which see her perform over 20 songs a night. She is currently working on a new album following 2013’s Britney Jean.
