One Direction star Liam Payne has died suddenly aged 31, after falling from a hotel balcony in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Local authorities have said they will conduct an autopsy and investigate the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Payne’s family said in a statement issued by his spokeswoman: “We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.
In a joint statement signed “Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry”, Payne’s One Direction bandmates said: “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing.
“In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
Payne rose to fame while competing on season five of The X Factor in 2010, when he was placed in the band One Direction along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.
They went on to become one of the world’s most successful boybands, selling 70 million records and performing in stadiums around the world.

The singer and actor Noah Cyrus, daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus and younger sister of Miley Cyrus, grew up as a passionate fan of One Direction.
The 24-year-old wrote an emotional post on her Instagram Stories in reaction to the shocking news of Liam Payne’s death:
“I’m not ever gonna be able to fully voice how I am feeling but..
“I feel so fortunate to have been in the same generation as Liam Payne and the phenomenon of 1D..
“Liam you are so loved and will always be loved by so many.
“This is the most devastating, awful, heart breaking news. I’m sending so much love to his family, girlfriend, and the close people around him.
“As someone who eat sleep breathed one direction and being apart of that fandom was such as huge part of my life and so many others. We are so lucky to have been apart of that fandom.
“We are so lucky to have known Liam Payne the singer and performer. But my heart goes out to the Liam Payne who was suffering behind closed doors. My heart goes out to his fans as well because I’m absolutely crushed and I imagine so many are so broken by the loss of someone so special.
“Thank you for the laughs, smiles, and songs. You will live forever through those. You will never be forgotten.

Halsey remembers loving One Direction ‘with an all-consuming force'
Pop star and actor Halsey has paid tribute to Liam Payne in a social media post. The 30-year-old has often described herself as a huge fan of One Direction, and in 2021 she bought a Calabasas compound from Payne for over $10m.
Writing on her personal tumblr @tiredandlonelymuse, Halsey said:
“i loved one direction with an all-consuming force when i was younger. it hurts deeply to mourn someone you were a massive fan of as teenager, and became a peer of as an adult.
“i know people change and grief is unsure or complicated when it’s attached to a fond memory or the feeling a person gave you and not tangibly the person themself. i can see many of you on here are struggling with that right now and i understand.
“a few years ago i purchased a home that Liam previously owned. there were rumors the house was haunted. He assured me it was not, and i believed him. because i know the ghosts that haunt us aren’t tethered to buildings. They live in parts of us that are harder to reach and they go wherever we do.
“as a parent, a fellow artist, and a fan, i simply cannot fathom this untimely loss. my heart goes out to his family, friends, and the fans.”

Liam Payne has died aged 31, after falling from a third-floor balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The One Direction singer was in a relationship with influencer Kate Cassidy at the time of his death, while ex-fiancée Maya Henry had issued a cease and desist last week alleging that the musician continued to contact her.
Prior to meeting Cassidy in October 2022, and Henry in 2019, Liam was in a relationship with former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole.

One Direction’s split seemed inevitable, but the break-up of one of the most successful boybands of all time still made headlines around the world and devastated millions of fans.
Formed on reality TV show The X Factor in 2010, the five-piece comprised late singer Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. Payne died of multiple traumatic injuries caused by his fall from a third-floor hotel balcony, police in Buenos Aires, Argentina have confirmed.
A preliminary autopsy indicated that the singer suffered “internal and external” hemorrhages and multiple traumatic injuries, according to the report seen by multiple outlets.
A toxicology report is still pending.

The One Direction singer was found dead, aged 31, in a hotel courtyard in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at around 5pm local time on Wednesday (16 October) after he sustained “extremely serious injuries” from a fall from a balcony on the third floor.
Payne was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities will now perform an autopsy and investigate the cause of death.
In the days before his death, his girlfriend of two years, 25-year-old Cassidy, had joined him on his trip to Argentina, and the pair had been documenting their trip together online.
