What is ‘Women Talking'?

One title in competition for Best Picture is Women Talking.

In comparison to the other frontrunner films, which include Tár and Elvis,Women Talking is unfamiliar to UK audiences.

Although the film had its US wide release on 20 January, UK viewers will have to wait until 10 February for Women Talking to hit cinemas.

Women Talking has a star-studded cast with Claire For, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, and Frances McDormand all attached.

The film, directed by Sarah Polley, follows women in an isolated religios colony who encounter a crisis of faith after a series of sexual assaults.

Who gets an invite?

Every year, the Academy Awards brings in the most glitzy and glam guests – but how does one actually nab the toughest ticket in town?

The Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the ceremony since 2002, seats 3,400 people across four levels and 20 opera boxes.

Oscar nominees and presenters each receive a pair of tickets and can request an additional pair. Most, of course, do.

As per The LA Times, after nominees account for 800 tickets, blocks are then reserved for the show’s broadcast network (ABC), the telecast’s sponsors, the production team, the accountants, the legal team, media, academy museum donors and various dignitaries, such as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Movie studios too, will receive a group of tickets. According to the publication, indie studios have complained that major studios receive more than their fair share.

Remove the spots that have obstructed views (these are occupied by seat fillers) and there’s only a few hundred available seats left.

Members of the academy are invited to enter a ticket lottery, which is conducted the old-fashioned way: written on slips of paper and pulled out of a drum.

Who gets invited to the Oscars?

Over the past two years, most everyone has applauded the motion picture academy’s decision to add nearly 1,500 new industry professionals as a long-needed step toward diversifying the group’s ranks.

... The Razzies

There’s the Oscars, and then there’s the Razzies.

The Golden Raspberry Awards, a parody awards ceremony honouring the worst of the year’s cinema, has been going for 41 years.

Earlier this week, the Razzies attracted criticism for nominating 12-year-old actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong for worst performance.

“With Armstrong’s nomination for Firestarter, organisers need to be told that punching down is not the way to go,” writes The Independent’s Jacob Stolworthy. “Or, failing that, perhaps it’s time to burn the whole idea to the ground.”

47 brilliant films that didn’t receive a single Oscar nomination

While there’s no doubt that an Oscar is a prestigious accolade, the gold statuette doesn’t automatically make a film good.

Just take a look at all the spectacular films, including American Psycho, The Big Lebowski, and In the Mood for Love, that were somehow overlooked by the Academy.

Will Smith is banned from any Academy events for the next 10 years

Will Smith is one star who will definitely not be in attendance at the awards cermony in March.

In April last year, it was announced that the actor received a 10-year ban from the Oscars gala and any Academy events.

A board of governors decided to impose the ban after Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars last March.

25 top-notch movies that bombed at the box office

Despite bombing at the box office, Babylon could still be in for a shot at this year’s Oscars.

Damien Chazelle’s old Hollywood bacchanal recouped less than half of its budget. Likewise, The Fabelmans, another Oscar contender, represents one of the biggest bombs of Steven Spielberg’s illustrious career.
