The Golden Globes returned with a blowout, star-studded ceremony on Sunday (7 January) night.

The annual, Beverly Hills-based awards show has been obscured in recent years after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the awards’ voting body) did not have a single Black member.

However, this year, the Globes were back in their usual Sunday slot on CBS and hoping to regain viewers. Broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, A-listers including Taylor Swift, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Kylie Jenner brought some much-needed stardust to the beleaguered show.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall were among the films to earn multiple awards. Christopher Nolan won his first Globe following six nominations while Barbie was surprisingly pipped to Best Picture in the Musical/Comedy category Poor Things.

Meanwhile, Beef, The Bear and Succession were the big winners in the TV categories.

Gina Torres, Patrick J Adams, Gabriel Macht and Sarah Rafferty are all at the Globes this year. Of course, there’s only one cast member that interviewers are interested in asking about: Meghan Markle.

Asked if anyone had called the Duchess of Sussex to ask whether she’d be joining them on the red carpet, Torres replies: “We don’t have her number!”

The stars are definitely out tonight

In this important return for the Globes following its race controversy of 2021, some people were wondering whether the stars would show up. Well, that question appears to have been answered with an emphatic, YES. It would be easier to ask who isn’t on this red carpet. DiCaprio is here, Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lawrence – the list goes on. So far so good for this reformed ceremony.

Why is May December nominated for Best Comedy?

The red carpet hosts have one question for the cast of May December: Is it a comedy?

It’s a question a lot of people have asked since Todd Haynes’s melodrama was nominated in the Musical/Comedy category.

While there are certainly moments of black comedy throughout the movie, people were shocked to see it competing against more clear-cut comedies such as The Holdovers and American Fiction.

Producer Will Ferrell, along with his star Natalie Portman, appeared awkward when the category issue was raised.

“It depends on your mood,” Ferrell answered. “There are some very comedic moments and some not-so-comedic moments. And that’s called life.”

“I think it is a melodrama with comedic elements,” Portman said. “There are certainly a lot of funny moments.”
