From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards will be revealed today, always a good indicator of who will be up for the Oscars in February.
UPDATE: They've been announced! Full list here.
Here’s a quick guide on everything you need to know:
When will they be announced?
5am LA time, 8am New York time, 1pm UK time.
Where can I watch them?
They’ll be read out from the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel and should be live-streamed on the Golden Globes website.
When are the actual awards taking place?
10 January.
Who is presenting this year?
Ricky Gervais. Even though he's done it before, he'll have a tough job filling the boots of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who were brilliant the last two ceremonies.
Who is likely to be nominated?
Leonardo DiCaprio is a safe bet for his intense shoot on The Revenant (though I fear the film itself may struggle), and he’ll probably be competing with Matt Damon for The Martian, Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl and potentially Johnny Depp for Black Mass.
Best Actress-wise, Room’s Brie Larson, Joy’s Jennifer Lawrence and Carol's Cate Blanchett are dead certs.
The Best Picture category is wide open though, Carol, Spotlight and Bridge of Spies will probably be in there, as might Quentin Tarantino’s still yet-to-be-released The Hateful Eight, but no film has emerged as a firm favourite for awards season yet this year.
