Speaking about the upcoming film, Rob Leifield — who created the iconic anti-hero — compared the partnership between the Merc with a Mouth and Cable to the buddy-cop film Rush Hour.
“He’s such a great actor,” the author said of leading star Ryan Reynolds (via ComicBook.com). “That’s where it starts, and gravitas, and who else really is going to hold their ground with Ryan as Wade/Deadpool. That is energy unbridled, and so you’ve gotta hold your ground.
“When I see the two of them, I’m like, ‘It’s going to be comic book’s equivalent to Rush Hour,’ and I don’t know if comic fans are ready for it. I think it’s going to be great.”
Leifield reiterated the comments on social media, writing on Twitter: “The pairing of Deadpool and Cable has always been a contrast in style and combustible. They have been a buddy cop film pairing.” He continued on Instagram: “Take your pic[k] from Lethal Weapon to Rush Hour to Turner & Hooch! But better!”
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will once again write the script, with John Wick and Atomic Blonde’s David Leitch directing actors Reynolds and Josh Brolin (Cable).
“If you only see No Country for Old Men and Sicario, you’ve seen two great totally separate Josh Brolin performances,” Liefeld said. “The Llewelyn who is sullen but determined and doesn’t speak much but you follow him the whole time in No Country, and Sicario, he’s this wild, shoot-em-up C.I.A. guy. The guy is a tremendous actor.”
Recently, Shioli Kutsuna joined the film’s cast in an undisclosed ‘key role’, with Jack Kesy also being cast as an unknown character along with Hunt for the Wilderpeople’s Julian Dennison. They join Atlanta actor Zazi Beats who will portray Domino.
Meanwhile, details regarding X-Men: Dark Phoenix — the next instalment in the main series X-Men films — have been announced, including the return of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy, along with the rumoured casting of Jessica Chastain.
